Mise-en-scene

Costume: The characters within the frame are all wearing either linen cloth or armour, this shows two things, first that the main characters are from a medieval era, most movies from a different genre or time zone would generally not use this style of dressing. Their costumes also show that they are prepared or preparing for physical conflict, something that is common in these kinds of movies.

Lighting: The scene uses low key lighting, this creates an ominous and serious tone within the frame, the use of backlights along with the angle in which the shot was taken shows the viewers that something intimidating and dangerous is coming.

Actors (Placement): The actors within the frame are placed in a synchronised battle formation giving the viewers a feeling of coordination and a feeling of trust between the figures. The fact that they all have their weapons drawn and are looking directly towards the camera adds to the feeling that something intimidating and dangerous is coming.

Makeup: Although difficult to make out, it is easy to assume that the figures within the frame have dirtied makeup on, this is apparent due to the setting they're in

Props: The props used are weapons, suggesting that they're about to have a battle, creating a serious and intense tone within the frame.

Setting: The setting looks to be a very large old room that has been destroyed or has not been taken care of, in the back there is a very large door which is the main source of the lighting for the scene. The room. Due to the massive amounts of paper filling the room, it looks like the room may have previously been a library, this fact supports the idea that the characters are on a journey and that they were searching for something in the room.

Costume: In the video above, Will Smith's character (Deadshot) is wearing typical american prison type clothing and is surrounded by other men wearing clothing that represent authority. This shows the viewers that Will Smith's character is a bad guy by nature and has therefore been sent to prison.

Lighting: This scene primarily uses high key lighting as the characters and setting are dimly lit up, but the scene also uses aspects of low key lighting as the creator chose to use shadows to show the dingyness of the setting

Actors: Will Smith's character is placed in the front near the shooting range to demonstrate his skills, he's surrounded by over a dozen of well placed less important figures dressed in authoritative clothing. The director has chosen to do this purposefully to make the viewers know how dangerous Will Smith's character truly is.

Makeup: Most of the figures are wearing clean makeup but Will Smith's character has a more scratchy and dirty appearance than the others, this shows the viewers that the prison is a hard place.

Props: Majority of the figures in the scene are using gun props in the movie, this is used to show that they have authority over Will Smith's character.

Setting: The majority of the scene takes place in a prison. Due to the tall grey walls and the rain, it creates a feeling hopelessness and sorrow. Since the viewers know that this place is a high-security prison, it also gives the viewers the feeling that the scene takes place in a very serious and dreadful place.

Costume: In the scene above most of the main characters are dressed in formal clothing, this shows the viewers that the main characters are well dressed and also well mannered (most of the time), Sherlock's clothing has been bloodied and ripped in some parts from a previous scene in the movie, this shows that Sherlock is in pain or is injured and the fact that he is still running with those injuries shows how determined he is to get out of that situation. Many of the soldiers Sherlock is running from are dressed in all black attire, this gives the soldiers a sense of uniform and military authority.

Lighting: The lighting used in this scene is primarily high key lighting throughout the scene, but even with this style of lighting the setting and characters are given a grim effect.

Actors: Throughout the scene, the main actors are running in an unsynchronised manner through the woods, the way they have been placed and the way they run shows the viewer a sense of desperation, you can see that the main characters are desperate to get out of the situation.

Makeup: The main characters in the movie all have dirtied makeup on whilst running through the woods, this shows that they have recently come out of a difficult situation. But once Hansel the large shell hits the woods near the main characters, their makeup changes more drastically as their cuts and wounds from the explosion become quite clear, open blood begins to cover their faces showing the power from the large shell.

Props: The main characters in this scene don't use many props until later on the scene where the
soldiers catch up with them. The actors that mainly carry the weapons are the soldiers that chase the main characters. They mainly use guns as their props, the guns add to the effect of authority the soldiers already have with their costumes. The large cannon like contraption they use near the end of the scene is incredibly large and powerful, this strengthens the viewers understanding of how powerful the main characters weaponry actually is.

Setting: The scene takes place in a snowy woods in Germany. The snow along with the black and grey colours that make up most of the surrounding areas in the scene add a very bleak and something that works very well with what is going on, as the chase ensues the scenery changes from relativley peaceful to an active battleground, due to this a feeling of excitement is created along with a feeling stress to see what is going to happen next.

Poster Analysis

Blade Runner:

From what the poster is portraying, I believe that Blade Runner (1982) is a Sci-Fi movie due to many things. The first reason being that the art style resembles the art style of the Star Wars franchise. The towers present in the poster look extremely futuristic to represent any tower that existed during that time period, and the flying vehicle also shows that the movie is set in the future. The colour scheme used in this poster, which consists of: yellows, reds, and splashes of blue are common amongst an action/sci-fi film. The tense expression on Harrison Ford's face along with the fictional handgun he possesses indicates that throughout the movie there may be moments of stress as well as tension, and some relief at the end; feelings that are all synonymous with action and sci-fi movies.

I believe that the movie is targeted towards men around 16-35 years old, that's mainly due to the action/Science fiction nature of the film meaning that there will be scenes of intense action and strong language.

Scary Movie 2 (2001)

At first glance, the film poster portrays a comedic/parody feeling due the pure facial expressions of each character. The characters do not seem particularly scared by whatever it is they are reacting to - which is not what you would expect from a typical horror movie. Not only that but on the shirts of two of the females within the frame they have very comedic prints. Also, in a yellow font at the top of the frame, the film is quoted to be, "Absolutely Hilarious", these words are not often used when talking about a horror movie, this implies that this is in fact a spin off from your regular horror film. In addition, the movie title is shown at the bottom of the frame. The red font is quite bold yet it is very basic giving us all the more reason to believe and understand that although we are told that this is a horror movie, ironically, the poster shows the viewers that this movie may in fact not be scary at all and that it is a parody of a horror film.

I believe that the movie is targeted towards people within the age of 16-30 years old due to the parody nature of the film. There could be some inappropriate jokes that only this age group may find somewhat acceptable.

Uzak (2004)

This movie poster from what I can tell is not English and is most likely of Turkish origins due to the title being Turkish, from the dark colour pallet and the ominous feeling from the background setting, I would say that the movie is a dramatic thriller based on the life experience of the figure in the middle of the frame. The cold setting along with the frozen lake already sets up an atmosphere of cold/bleakness. A trend that may occur often in the movie in both a literal and metaphorical form due to the dark atmosphere the image portrays.

I believe that the movie might be targeted towards more mature audiences at the age group around 20-40 years old.

I'm Not Scared (2003)

At first glance of the movie poster, it seems to me that it may be a coming of age thriller/mystery movie about a young child. The low angle shot making the main figure look at the camera from above creates a feeling of loss or searching. The Italian words within the frames suggests that the movie is Italian. The title suggests that the movie could be about the main character trying to face his fear from a threat or belief.

I believe that the movie is targeted towards 15-40 year olds.

Sin City (2005)

From first glance, the movie appears to be an action/noir movie due to multiple reasons. First, the colour pallet is full of greys and blacks, this alone creates a serious tone, a feeling that is often prevalent in action movies due to the fast-paced action scenes. Second, due to the fact that almost every figure in the frame are carrying weapons, it suggests that the movie will contain a slew of fast-paced action scenes. The title alone provides insight into what the movie might be about or what the main focus of the movie will be on, when using words "sin city" the viewer gets a feeling of wrong or taboo, this could mean that the movie heavily focuses on illegal activity.

Due to the action nature of the image and the dark colour pallet, I would say that the movie's age demographic is around 18-20. This mainly due to the possibility of nudity and heavy action in the movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest (2006)

With the obvious pirate imagery in the frame, its evident that the movie is an adventure/action epic. The movie's title suggests that the movie takes place around the Caribbean during the 1700's. The subtitle "Dead Mans Chest" supports the idea that the movie's main plot revolves around the location of a chest and the journey looking for that chest. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Kiera Knightly are all very established and well-known actors, this alone tells the viewers that the movie is a highly produced movie from an established producing company (in this case it's Disney). The image of a squid-like creature destroying a ship supports the idea that the movie has mythological tones to it as well, these tones also support that the movie is, in fact, a fictional movie with elements of non-fiction.

I believe that the movie targets families.

Bride and Prejudice (2004)

From first glance you get the feeling of romance but also comedy leading the audience to believe that the movie is a romantic comedy. At the very top of the poster, it is mentioned that this movie was also created by the director of "Bend it like Beckham" since the director is known for creating comedic movies, it's obvious to presume that this movie is the same. The title its self is a parody of the book Jane Austen had written called "Pride and Prejudice", this alone gives the movie a comedic feel. The way the main figures are standing in the middle shows that the main focus of the movie will be around their lives and their journey into love. The background figures are split into two, on the left-hand side there are western males and females celebrating, whilst on the right, there are Indian males and females celebrating, this may hint at the there is a unifying of two cultures within the movie.

I would say that this movie is targeted towards families of an age range around 9-30 year olds due to jolly image the picture shows.

Million Dollar Baby (2005)

The three figures within the movie are all in dramatic poses with low-key lighting, this imagery gives the viewer the idea that the movie is surrounded by a very serious tone hinting at the fact that this might be an action movie. The female figure within the frame is wearing clothing a sports bra, this indicates that the movie's plot may have a sporting element.

I believe that the target audience would be adults.
